Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What skills did almost everybody have 50 years ago, but few people have today?
10·3 months agoI worked in a private library that still had it’s card catalogue up until 2005. People were always ripping out the cards (there was something like a metal knitting needle that passed through a punched hole in each card to stop idiots from destroying the catalogue, so the gobshites ripped them out instead).
The early digital catalogues weren’t great so the old card system persisted.

Technology@lemmy.world•Perceiving AI as a 'job killer' negatively influences attitudes towards democracy— When people perceive AI as replacing human labour, trust in democracy and political participation declineEnglish
5·3 months agoTrump and co. are merely impatient oligarchs that feel that they now have the technological and propaganda controls fine tuned enough to reduce the chances of blowback ever reaching them as they ramp up the extraction of value from the rest of us.
For the other lot were doing this apace too but most of the worst of their efforts were hidden in the global south.

Which gives superficial comfort as it gives scant protection from how aggregate data is used to upend democracy.
“Chinese authorities have far-reaching access rights to personal data within the sphere of influence of Chinese companies,” she added.
And that’s different to American companies how? None of this climate of data harvesting is currently good for us.

51·1 year agoI think I remember these. They were a low quality chocolate stick wrapped in paper. I didn’t like them. I think I got that they were preying on kid’s desire to ape adult behaviours but I may be conflating a decade of memories.

Memes@lemmy.ml•Taxation will not work, we need to just take and devide their money
4·1 year agoThey’d just ‘devide’ up their businesses into a chain of symbiotic entities defined by paygrade. Then the executive level can enrich itself insulated from us front line grunts.

I could swear I heard that whole ACER laptop angle a couple of months ago on someone else’s podcast. I don’t want to say verbatim but I was having severe dejayvu. It wasn’t a Doctorow podcast that much I’m sure.
Extra points for not lifting the spagetti pile when you’re hovering.
Ah this is the London Hackney Cab flourish. It’s kind of like yelling ‘Yeehaw’ as the bull leaps into the air and somehow you are still attached.

I’d go with Necrophobic so that people get the impression I stayed at the party for twice as long as I was able to manage.
