Technology@lemmy.zip•Why have so many people stopped posting on social media?English
5·12 days agoThe entire point of social media was to show off how fake and better than everyone else’s lives yours is. Now everyones lives suck and theyre too lazy to fake it because ai means anyone can shop themselves in the bahamas.
Edit: rich celebrities post on social media all the time. Youre just not thinking of the hypercapitalist influencers. Gotta expand your horizons.

pics@lemmy.world•All over the Sacred Valley are walls with stone joints so precise, you can't slip a piece of paper between them. This one is in the Inca town of Sacsayhuaman, Peru (yes, it is pronounced like that).
1·13 days agoAs long as both rocks are relatively flat on the connected faces, in most cases no. A piece of paper is, what, 8 inches wide on its second shortest axis? For two “relatively” flat pieces of rock, your going to have multiple places where a small segment juts out. Those are the segments that will support all the weight of the rock, and a heavier rock will have more/thicker supporting segments. Both of those factors combined, especially on rocks as heavy as these, would lead me to expect not being able to stick a fairly large piece of paper between them. Something much thinner, like a sticky note, would be significanly easier to fit through those gaps. But a standard piece of notebook paper would not be able to fit through the gaps on my window hinges, and they are by no means sealed.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Have you ever met a truly evil person? What happened?
22·20 days agoAight, thats on me i suppose. I figured my tone combined with the absurd reductionism of his statement wouldve indicated joking sarcasm, but I may have made an error in judgement. Ill add a /jk
It doesnt seem like it needs to be said that charity is good. But for one, the implication I was making was referring to child molestation, which is well documented amongst the group i refered to. Hence why I made a reductionist joke about the phrasing of their words.
For two, it would seem to me that the important thing there would be the charity, not specifically that it came from a catholic priest. Would that same charity from a local charity, organization, or individual not carry the same weight? Hence it seems quite pointless to bring up that priests do charity. So do a lot of other people. Its not their entire job either. The distinction lies in the fact that other charity groups arent known to engage in child molestation, nor have a systemic issues with covering up and protecting child molestors.

116·20 days agoMalicious ignornace is malicious. Hell, ignorance implies access to information and refusal to engage with it. Ignorance is malicious.
Not sure why people try to justify shitty people, just accept that theyre shitty and move on, no need for labels. Do you really need to know the difference between hitler and your local catholic priest, or do you need to know theyre both dangers to society and should be treated as such?

Technology@lemmy.world•Paul McCartney joins music industry protest against AI with silent trackEnglish
21·22 days agoWhen discussing things like this, i find it best to view it through the lens of ubi. AI is happening, theres no amount of online debating thats going to change that. So if you dont create an economic system where people dont have to work to survive, people arent going to survive in your system. Hence, they have a point. People that WANT to get into music always have that option, untied to economic success. People that only make music as a cash grab now no longer have that incentive, because they dont need to.
People having to work to survive is barbaric

Fediverse@lemmy.world•Is there a formalized ban appeal process for the fediverse? Do I just direct message a mod?English
3·28 days agoIm not trying to argue here, but I am a little confused. The first section seems to be referring to medical care, in which case there would seem to be some distinction? I suspect the answer to my confusion lies in the second part, but im having difficulty parsing it at all. Is it a reaponse to the first part? A continuation? The modlog wont load on my app.
Again, i have no agenda here, im just confused and would like context to avoid potential future issues

Technology@lemmy.world•God ****** dammit, here we go againEnglish
18·1 month agoSpammers go for the easiest targets. If you do stuff like this, they might redesign their system to make it LESS likely to send to you. Keep in mind theyre targetting the elederly, mentally handicapped, and the emotionally desperate. They specifically DO NOT want to target the educated, technologically literate, and those that will waste their time. By attempting to technologically limit them from their scams, you make it more difficult for them to target you and it makes it obvious theyre not worth your time.
Its not about making yourself scam proof, its about making yourself an unappealing target.
(This all applies to scam emails, dunno if it has any effect if the goal is phishing but i would imagine so. If they can phish 5 people in the time it takes to phish you, youre no longer their target.)
Edit: this is why scam emails look obviously scammy, with misspelled words and grammarical errors. Its not a mistake, its an attempt to preemptively weed out people who want to waste their time

Games@lemmy.world•Sliced off the tip of my thumb, what are some good one handed games?English
3·1 month agoThe android port of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 is amazing! Id recommend turning on all the pause options, it effectively turns it into turn based combat. The gui is incredibly intuitive, and you can perform all of your actions either with a stylus or even a single finger. If you like star wars or dnd, its basically guaranteed to be a fun game. Do note though that you will want to install the Restored Content mod, which will require either a rooted android or a computer to allow you to install the mod. It fixes a massive amount of potentially game breaking bugs and restores a bunch of cut content. Not sure what happened with the development of the game, but im guessing the studio forced it to be released before it was complete.

Technology@lemmy.world•The Big Short Guy Just Bet $1 Billion That the AI Bubble PopsEnglish
6·1 month agoCool, in a not super cool way. Nvidia is kinda scummy but the work they do is valuable. I appreciate you dropping the facts on me, but im not sure how to feel about them.
The first issue is definitely solvable, thats just a material science issue. The second one is also definitely possible, but depending on the payload it might be very difficult. Seems easier to just accelerate a tungsten sphere to mach 4 than to bother with a warhead.
For the intense heat, thats a waste product. Get rid of it by not producing it in the first place. Which means your rails are now cryocooled superconductors.
For the immense forces, i might need to look into railguns again. Afaik the only force that isnt being counteracted is the force on the projectile. I might be wrong at those power levels, while the net force should be zero the force on the arms could be opposite, ripping the railgun apart or crushing it. The solution i would think is coiling your rails around the barrel, now the rails effectively act as their own support with a minor bracing.
For the record, i didnt put it together that he was referring specifically to the large models. I just knew i made a rail gun back in high school and its wasnt difficult, so the idea that the US govt cant copy my project struck me as absurd.
Finally, im a hobby electrician with my passions lying more in technology and futurism, so i have looked into railguns in passing but I do not work for the military nor have i looked into the specifics of the large scale models, so corrections are more than welcome.

10·1 month agoYeah, but dont they also have the largest promisory debt? Havent they loaned the most most money that they dont actually have?

Yep, thats the key issue that so many people fail to understand. They want AI to be deterministic but it simply isnt. Its like expecting a human to get the right answer to any possible question, its just not going to happen. The only thing we can do is bring error rates with ai lower than a human doing the same task, and it will be at that point that the ai becomes useful. But even at that point there will always be the alignment issue and nondeterminism, meaning ai will never behave exactly the way we want or expect it to.
