When you say everyone, actually you don’t mean everyone, so your post really doesn’t mean much, now does it.
I think there’s two basic mistakes that you made. First, you think that we aren’t experts, but it’s definitely true that some of us have studied these topics for years in college or graduate school, and surely many other people are well read on the subject. Obviously you can’t easily confirm our backgrounds, but we exist. Second, people who are somewhat aware of the topic might realize that it’s not particularly productive to engage in discussion on it here because there’s too much background information that’s missing. It’s often the case that experts don’t try to discuss things because it’s the wrong venue, not because they feel superior.
What a terrible headline. Self-aware? Really?
The timing of Obama’s award was very bizarre because he was approving all of the drone strikes in Pakistan at the very same time he was winning that award. There was never a war with pakistan, those drone strikes were surely in violation of international law and certainly not peaceful, and some of them blew up wedding processions and whatnot, killing children and women and random men who were not at all involved in any kind of violence.
It was somewhat surreal to read the newspapers at the time. I think many Democrats loved him because he was well spoken and not horrible, and the Republicans who hated him already hated him, so maybe not that many people were interested in discussing why he got this award that he didn’t deserve.
Hey, it’s good at fake apologies! As good as the CEO, no doubt.
You don’t, but AI does.
You say “mistakes” I say “features”. That’s what they wanted, right? Humans are not accountable, couldn’t be helped, that’s life.
That depends what you wanna do and where you wanna live. If you’re not sure, look for working holiday kinds of programs and try them on for size. It also depends what languages you speak, or want to speak.
Haha, funnily enough, it was in fact a new policy. Written down, even. Just not vetted by anyone.
I think it depends on what you mean by “expect”. Do you mean you think they have a moral obligation to apologize because of their actions? That’s not narcissistic. That’s a value judgment. Others may disagree with you, if they hold different values or disagree about the facts involved.
But maybe by “expect” you think they owe it to you, or something like that? Then there is some potential for narcissism.
Then as you noted, what is the apology for? Forgiveness? To undo the damage? To show awareness of the badness? To express a goal to not do that shitty thing in the future? People giving and receiving apologies can easily disagree about what the apology is supposed to accomplish.
Grammar is descriptive, not prescriptive. <- The fancy way to say what you said. :-)
In keeping with this month’s news, if you don’t know what the Japanese American Internment Camps are, or were rather, you might read up on them. I wasn’t taught about them at all.
Another thing that’s I think more niche but still ought to be taught is the history of censorship of anti-war protests. There were some terrible rulings about a hundred years ago that were later reversed, and that all made it possible for people to protest Vietnam the way they did.
Finally, one piece of history that’s missing from many high school civics classes is any discussion of how unions themselves led to the minimal labor laws that we have today, that union members were killed in large numbers in the process of pushing for said laws.
Your premise is wrong. People recommend all kinds of things, including those two. But you didn’t tell us the backstory. Maybe you’re trying to suggest that many people have told these things to you, and if so, we would want to know the context. It’s quite possible that you’ve described your own situation in a way where those two ideas are obvious potential steps to try.
I’m also unclear what you mean about people not being capable of therapy. They might not be able to afford it, but that’s not a question of their capacity. Certainly it’s true that various types of therapy can be more or less effective for various people depending on a ton of factors. But it is peculiar to rule out therapy as something that’s totally impossible without any explanation of how or why.
It’s worth noting that there are some Democrats, both politicians and voters, who also endorse this strategy. Which is not surprising, especially for a career politicians, because it’s effectively noting that they don’t have any values, and also that their tactics are weak.
We can only speculate as to what’s in the files, but we might want to speculate that there are multiple names of his friends or at least funders.
I know I know, the A stands for “adolescent”. What does the I stand for?
The only important kind of warfare is class warfare.
This also depends on the country and the industry. For many American jobs these days, your previous employer might be opening themselves up to a lawsuit if they said anything bad about you, so many companies now will at most identify the duration of your employment and your job title but nothing else.
The point is not that a former employee would necessarily win a lawsuit, but they could bring one and the legal bills alone would be significant, therefore many company lawyers will say to just shut the hell up when asked any questions about performance.
I guarantee you that it will not descend into eternal servitude. People die, environments collapse, wars happen, empires fall. Although this may sound negative, go read the history books and see how much horrible shit has happened in the course of human existence. All of that should show you that progress doesn’t … progress … linearly. Things change, things get worse, things get better, dictators die, that’s all part of human life.
Of course there could be remarkably bad times, particularly if we face nuclear war or extended effects related to extreme climate change. Those are not cyclical in any way shape or form. But many other horrible things that you’re seeing right now in the united States, for example, similar bad shit has happened before. That doesn’t mean the country is going to recover in 5 years or even in 50 years, or that it won’t, but it’s not the first time this kind of happening has occurred in history, and it certainly won’t be the last.
