being horny is a boomer thing.
i guess that explains the lack of sex and passion in media.

sharks play into man’s fear of nature, and regardless of the reality of shark attacks, the plot is going to seem reasonable. man can’t control nature. oohhh, scary.
a killer car film is generally going to require some supernatural element and then be accused of being ‘schlocky’ or ‘so bad it’s good,’ like in this thread. if you’re killed by a car, most people would consider it someone’s fault–either the pedestrian or one of the drivers, and an 80 year old with poor eyesight doesn’t make for a good horror film.
i guess you could make some silly a24 ‘arthouse’ film called ‘the passenger.’ it would be about a sane passenger in a car driven by an increasingly reckless driver that builds up to a life-altering crash. it could answer questions about ‘why didn’t they just ask to be let out?’
what is this even trying to say? that people who kayak or canoe have illusions of grandeur? understood. even stating that childhood dreams are crushed by capitalism is trite.
i wanted to be a beautiful woman who was a covergirl on an issue of sassy magazine and look where that got me. i’m just another 40 year old man who wears pink dresses when they’re shitposting on lemmy because they got banned from reddit for telling someone on their local board that they were ‘a delusional gentrifying yuppie.’
join the fucking club on being disillusioned.

if you take away their wealth what have most of these celeb billionaires accomplished? zuck created a website that got popular that wasn’t even the first of its kind. it was just popular…
and if it disappeared tomorrow i wouldn’t give two fucks. humanity survived for thousands of years without facebook and instagram and it hasn’t been a benefit to society. it didn’t solve a problem that needed to be solved–we already had myspace and photobucket and the local classified ads.
why are we treating rich people like celebrities just for being rich, especially ones who don’t impact your life in any positive way? that’s the real issue.
i never knew who the CEO or creator of gillette was even though i shave my face every day. that guy deserves more recognition.

no lol.
have you ever met a rich person? like a real rich person? they’re arrogant and snobby and think the rest of us have no right to exist. there’s a reason there’s this massive push to implement AI. part of it is to save money but the other part of it is that they legit think that we’re all lesser and AI replacing call centers and fast food jobs will hasten our departure.
we’ll all end up being thrown in a volcano before they implement UBI.
i’d say asia has more of a chance in the long run just because social responsibility is part of culture and that can often act as an antidote to the worst parts of capitalism. south korea can be gross but at least they throw their corrupt leaders in jail…
no chance of this happening in the states.

more like
systematic failures of capitalism ruining your life
then have everyone shout at you ‘what about personal responsibility?’ often, even your family.
this is one of the most insidious things about american culture and ends up inflicting the most damage to your well-being.
media was at least owned by dozens or hundreds of separate entities that all had different viewpoints and agendas and would employ more people with working class pedigrees.
oldschool issues of seventeen magazine have more wokeness in them than what people complain about nowadays. that was a national coffee table publication read by millions of teen girls.
in 2026, there’s no resistance whatsoever other than internet chatter that doesn’t amount to fuck all. i don’t even mean resistance that matters but at least someone who writes for a national publication who’ll rip into a tv show or film and call it whiny, out of touch yuppie bullshit.
our entire culture has been gentrified.
this line of thinking has narrowed way too much.
people used ‘re****’ as a general slur for years and nobody was rounding up the mentally challenged for extermination. in fact, nobody ever used this word in front of the mentally challenged other than the socially awkward.
nazi’s shouldn’t be tolerated. but the modern world acts like people who make mistakes or are mildly offensive are the same thing as nazis.

this article is stupid for another reason: go on youtube and look up camcorder footage of public high schools in the 90s.
absolutely NOBODY is anxious about getting filmed, and nobody has bad intentions, and nobody would write an article about it.
maybe things ARE worse but maybe the situation is more complex than meta glasses.
i’d say it’s relative to your culture. if you’re a liberal woman growing up in iran or saudi arabia you’re gonna hate your life.
but this opens up genuine discussions about right/wrong and whatever else.
the fact of the matter is that we just make up everything about humans and their relations as we go along. there is no real right or wrong, there’s just perspective in any given moment in time and context.
if there are 34738434739473 iranian women who support their lifestyle and 40000 who don’t then who’s right?
according to americans the minority is right, but we pretend that they aren’t in america when it comes to domestic concerns.
whoa.

can journalism please stop digging deep into the cambridge to pull out words like ‘wheedles?’
i’ve been on this earth for almost 50 years, and i’ve read thousands of texts and never seen that word fucking ever.
you should NOT have to look in the dictionary to read pop culture drivel. these dipshits are just trying to justify their privileged educations, and the ironic thing is that none of them can write for shit despite needing a private school/ivy league pedigree to churn out vacuous thinkpieces for teen vogue and futurism (whatever the hell that is).

the memory of china spans 3k years. think about that. we dwell hard and long about the history of america and that only goes back a few hundred. and that was a time full of witch hunts, slavery and other controversial topics that’d make a great movie but come off as embarrassing in reality.
we came up with the television and the atom bomb–i say big deal. the chinese were there through thousands of years of advancements and follies, enduring and enduring and keeping their national strength through the unbearable weight of millennia. this is when americans can’t go without their smartphone for 60 seconds and believe in nothing other than legal tender.
industrial capitalism is 200 years old, the chinese are as old as mars in comparison. put that in your pipe and smoke it.

why is this a controversy though?
this type of bullshit is common across the repair industry but we expect computer techs to be scrupulous? the entire business model likely depends on scamming people.
with cars there’s at least an excuse to put up with it in most cases. it can be labor intensive and require real tools to replace a component like an alternator on many models. even a bold and confident novice is going to feel anxiety when a bolt won’t come off and think to themselves ‘this isn’t worth dealing with.’
but if you can’t figure out how to ‘wipe windows’ or replace a ram stick with the power of the internet at your disposal you deserve to be scammed. do you have a philips head from dollar general, a usb stick and did you play with legos as a child? then you can do 100% of computer repair work.
on top of that, the entire IT methodology is to run a few basic windows commands in the console like ‘sfc /scannow’ and then reinstall windows if it doesn’t work.

what’s interesting about it?
it looks like another well-off person cosplaying as a poor as a lifestyle. the semi itself probably cost 200k.

it’s in texas though.
now all of a sudden we care about texas? what goes on in texas is as important to me as the affairs of a random tiktok influencer.
we’re fucked no matter if this data center is built or not.

nintendo used to mean games like castlevania, metroid, earthbound, final fantasy, shadowrun, goldeneye. now it means ‘games for little kids featuring goofy characters with too-big heads.’
you shouldn’t have this system to begin with.
we’re all adults, right?

i have such a simmering nostalgia for the old days. on tuesdays there would be 39 cent hamburgers and on wed there’s be 49 cent cheeseburgers. this was at the local micky d’s. that’s what we called mcdonalds in those days. we were beyond a first name basis.
this was around the time i started my first job, which paid $7.50 an hour. and no, this wasn’t in 1970, it was 2001. i wasn’t in the middle of a space odyssey, but an odyssey of the everyman; it was days filled with the aroma and flavor of savory fast food and nights spent with fit y2k hotties in low-rise jeans sipping strawberry shakes. neither of these things cost much and that was a mutual expectation.

hey, scientist here. i did an extensive study on ram prices that tracked the cost of ram between 2007 and 2026. this may not sound impressive, because all i had to do was look at the average price every year, but trust me, bro, it was difficult.
if you think your average american can read or use microsoft excel you got another thing coming.

doubt many ‘of the most valuable’ books haven’t been digitized or aren’t available on amazon or ebay for a pittance. when i need to find something on anna’s archive, it’s usually because it’s some bullshit, tween pulp romance novel from the late 70’s.
nothing to brag about.
