Apple is working to simplify the Camera Control button's design on the iPhone 18 in order to reduce costs, claims an established Chinese leaker. The current Camera Control button on iPhone 17 models uses both capacitive and pressure sensors beneath a sapphire crystal surface.
I still don’t understand why this is a thing… there has to be less than 1000 people that use camera control in any advanced sense. More people would use an IR blaster than this.
I can’t really get it to work as anything other than a button press.
Have a look at Settings->Camera->Camera Control to get more flexibility with the button.
I have it mapped to the functions I want but it doesn’t sense the things like zoom in a reliable way. For me it’s just a button and I use the touchscreen for everything else.
Yeah, agreed. When I do use the button for the shutter the whole phone moves or shakes a lot compared to just using the screen. It’s basically just a shortcut to the camera for me.
I initially thought the same. I finally upgraded my phone this year and since the new phones have the button I just tried it out and ended up really liking it. I would consider myself a photography enthusiast though, so I can see this is not for everyone. It just feels more like an actual camera. The position is still awkward, though
