They are all some binary file that completes a task. That LLMs have a statistically derived “personality” (if one would be dangerous enough to call it that) to make people like them was a purposeful mistake in development to trick people into embracing the technology. LLM is non-deterministic by nature which means results can never be trusted.

Honestly, the Photoshop filter analogy may be wrong because the filter is deterministic. The same settings produce the same results every time as it is math on an image file. LLMs literally can’t do that.

LLM tech is only seeing more “reliable” results now as they often throw the tool against a sandbox environment where it has to execute deterministic code to compensate for the random unreliability, and it still screws up.

Linus knows code, the tool sped up his process. In the absence of his knowledge, it would be useless.

Neat toy, but way too inefficient to bank the future on, and very dangerous to have such a religious reaction to.

LLMs are akin to fancy Photoshop filters for code. They can be used well by professionals and terrible by n00bs.

Another one of those things to think about at scale. So many vibe-coded web sites have such terrible performance. Computers burning power on absolutely nothing, phones draining battery on absolutely nothing. They are causing energy usage to go way up across the planet by lazy ass design that isn’t tested or verified all across the board.

Have you heard of cable? Broadcast? Satellite? This already existed. That was the experience. Flip channels to find a show that’s good enough and find something new along the way.

But that’s the real thing that happened. It was never about tech “disrupting” TV any more than it was Uber “disrupting” cabs.

It was just tech going, “hey we want to be in cable, let’s take over and replace cable.”

Swapping one base technology for another, and price-dancing the whole way there, so when your streaming service costs $300/mon, it has been so long that you forgot $80/mon cable used to exist. Read-only services that couldn’t serve you dynamic ads every 3 seconds while profiling your home network and watching your cat through a webcam to figure out what litter coupons to e-mail you next week.

The cable guy screaming in the middle of the street on the streaming service South Park was spot on.

Funny thing is, your post isn’t actually deleted in the database of the hosting fediverse server either. It’s still there, and you can restore it.

Deleting your account “should” delete the database entries for your user account, and propagates a delete command out to the fediverse, but the fediverse can choose to ignore it as well.

It’s all a bit odd.
