Anne of Green Gables is one of my favourite comfort novels. It just instantly takes me to a happy place. Somewhere on the internet, I once saw Anne described as
a red-haired, freckle-faced orphan who faces the world with nothing but the sheer force of her personality
which summarises it very well.
If anyone is interested in checking it out, I cannot recommend this LibriVox recording by Karen Savage enough.

I get that. It shouldn’t be necessary to do research just to be sure it’s safe. I apologise for my aggressive tone. It must be really scary and exhausting to live somewhere like that. My country is still holding up but seems to be sliding slowly in that direction too.
So do whatever makes you stay safe and feel safe.
I’m sorry if I misgendered you. I was already exhausted from the other comments that clearly state that they are men and probably was biased in that regard. But my point still stands that there is no reason to completely forego tracking apps.
Drip, the app mentioned several times in this thread, let’s you encrypt the locally stored database with a password you have to enter every time you open the app. How is that not safer than a random piece of paper?
It’s so exhausting that this thread is full of men telling women what they should and shouldn’t do while having very little knowledge about the topic.
Do people need an app for taking notes? Or a calendar?
Sure, I used to do it on paper for many years. But it’s much more convenient to track it on my phone, which I have almost always with me. That way I can check whether I’m likely to be bleeding heavily before making plans with my friends to go swimming that day or on a long hike without access to a toilet.
Also many women don’t just track the blood flow but also other data like temperature, cervix and cervical mucus. This helps calculate the most fertile days. It’s much easier to let an app do that.
I think many use apps that don’t show avatars. I usually browse lemmy with Eternity and sometimes forget they even exist.

I’m also not sure if it’s what OP is looking for, but I also think Fall of Civilisations is not quite as dry as other history podcasts.
He does a great job of painting a picture through the narration, making you imagine what it would be like to have lived in those times. And he sometimes does add his personal takes (always clearly pointed out as personal takes).
It might still be too narrative for OP, but it might also be colourful enough.
In addition to what others here have already said: Sometimes what they gain is a feeling of power and/or control.
This can play a role in the vicious cycle of abuse. People feel powerless because they are abused. To regain power they abuse others. Then they are the ones in control of the situation.

Yes, they are. The system you described above, of women being provided for and not having to work, only works if you are rich and have poorer people you can exploit to do the childcare and housework for you.
And how could this not be frowned upon by cultures such as Swedish where women and men are regarded as equals?
Edit: It’s not about polygamy per se but about the women’s role this kind of polygamous marriage. I don’t know your family and it might work for everyone involved but that’s where her connection’s worry comes from.
Okay, my bad. But the fact that she had to have it explicitly written in her marriage contract means that it’s not the legal standard and doesn’t apply to every other woman in Quatar. And it still only works because she doesn’t marry anyone else.
To add to this: If both men and women are allowed to have multiple spouses (which is the only fair way to do it), how do you deal with situations where a husband has multiple wives who has multiple husbands who also have multiple spouses? This sounds like a nightmare from a legal perspective.
I’m not saying I’m against polyamory, do whatever you want, as long as everybody involved is fine with it. It could work legally, if you could get married as a group of n people but then not marry other people individually. But that’s not how polygamy works in Quatar or worked for Mormons. There the husband marries several wives individually and the wives have no say in it.
Oh, that sucks. This is why we can’t have nice things.
