The first police were appointed to investigate and punish minor crimes commited agains civilians.

Then why are most “uncivilized” societies have more egalitarian and non-violent than “civilized” ones?

Uncivilized societies engage in violence much more frequently than civilized societies.

That’s the case for individual/personal violence, and also for institutional/mass violence.

Civilized societies are better than uncivilized society in anything they do collectively, be it science, production, or murder.

Since civilized societies are so much better at murdering, the few cases where mass murder does happen are much more significant.

However, such cases remain an exception, as opposed to what is the case for uncivilized societies.

Uncivilized societies may be harmless, but they are certainly not peaceful.

Civilized societies are more powerful, but they yield their power much more carefully.

When I went to college the dot was used for the dot product (scalar product) of two vectors while the cross was used for the cross product (vector product) of two vectors.

Since in this case numbers (read: one-dimensional vectors) are multiplied, the dot product is used, which should be denoted by a dot.

Well the options aren’t just capitalism and socialism. There’s also worse capitalism. So a normal capitalist system that protects itself does not just prevent socialism, it also prevents worse capitalism.

An example of a system that turned to worse capitalism is Nazi Germany. That’s why today, Germany prevents system change, so as to not again change from normal capitalism to worse capitalism.

If left wing policies were truly more popular, why didn’t the Democrats win? The voters didn’t get Bernie, so if you can’t get your ideal option, you instead take the worse of the two remaining ones? Even if voters were only voting for damage reduction, they’d still vote Democrat in that case.

But the Democrats didn’t win. The voters don’t want damage reduction. The voters want damage.

If the vast majority of Americans believed the Democrats to be less evil, the Democrats would have 90% of the vote. If that were the case, the Republicans would move ever further left, perhaps even overtaking the Democrats, until they get a chance at winning again.

The reason the parties are right wing is because the voters are right wing.

The reason that people don’t vote Democrats is the same reason that people won’t join your revolution.

If you found enough people to support a revolution, that’d mean you have enough people to change the system by simple voting.

Most people aren’t suicidal, not even passively. A small minority is passively suicidal (and that minority is very loud on Lemmy and Reddit), but generally humans do enjoy life.

Doing something out of self interest does not make it immoral. Creating art out of pure self interest doesn’t make it immoral either.

R6 is in between an Arcade game and a Tactical Competitive Game

I think R6 is very far from an arcade game.

I actively played R6 and Overwatch for a while and then stopped. After a pause, coming back to Overwatch was no problem; below Master pretty much everyone is playing casually. Coming back to R6 however, was overwhelming. Everyone is playing strategically optimally, you have to play a lot, follow the meta, and be very focused to be able to play in mid to high ranks.

At least that’s my experience. R6 is not what I consider an arcade game.

Providing expiration notifications costs Let’s Encrypt tens of thousands of dollars per year

Not doubting them, but I don’t understand how that’s possible.

Storing the email addresses and expiration dates takes an irrelevant amount of storage space, even if they had billions of cutomers.

Sending the emails should also not cost thousands, even if a significant amount of customers regularly let their certificates expire (which hopefull isn’t the case).

So where are the tens of thousands of yearly costs coming from?
