  • This is why lots of software has started adopting SSPL license which doesn’t actually fix the problem and isn’t a FOSS license.

I still think a new license scheme should be considered though. Giants like AWS and Google have been profiteering off of FOSS for way too long now.

AGPL has been deemed generally successful in this regard because it has been upheld in court cases and forced companies to comply, which it seems to work pretty great for SaaS.

The problem is these giants will usually just choose a more permissive alternative anyway. Both MongoDB and Redis have forks that they can use, and GPL itself is permissive enough for private forking being legal.

Not unless I need to get some info from a niche country sub that barely exists on lemmy

And even then no login, read only.

Much prefer messing around here. I only just got my first ban from NCD because I said the US would prevent Ukraine from joining NATO which kind of made me look like a Russian shill which I assume is the #1 spam NCD receives.

Otherwise I have really enjoyed being able to share my opinion without getting admin/mod banned, even on communities and instances with a lopsided set of users.

I have pissed off both ml and world users which is funny because they each claimed I was from the opposite instance. But no such thing as shadowban or user nuking. I can actually discuss things here in detail, as well as receive quality posts from all of you :)

  • Sometimes I wish No Man’s Sky and Elite Dangerous would combine their talents into one game just to get Star Citizen to shut up permanently.

Each one could use features from the other. Add in a dynamic user controlled economy, and suddenly everything SC has been promising after wasting hundreds millions of dollars would be right there.

As much crap Frontier gets, they made a killer custom game engine which perfectly makes it hugely immersive from day one, which shouldn’t be surprising considering the original Elite was the first proper wireframe 3D graphics game.

Hello Games got a proper roasting for releasing a shell game, but they actually bounced back. Their planet generation and surface gameplay is unmatched, and their updates outshine Frontier’s.

ED started out as a crowdfund too, and No Man’s Sky as essentially a startup. Both of these game’s received their fair share of criticism, but ultimately they produced a solid 4/5 game. Meanwhile Scam Citizen has been bankrolling for 12 years now, yet they hardly seem to receive the same level of criticism as ED ans NMS got for comparatively much much smaller issues.

It is noted for being one of the highest-funded crowdfunding projects, having raised over US$700 million as of May 2024

  • Fake Qurans

This wouldn’t work for the exact reason you just pointed out, the fake would be dead obvious even down to a letter. There is only one Quran that probably hundreds of millions of people have memorized, and it would be fairly easy even for an outsider to verify a fake.

Moreover this is a dumb take considering the real reason the middle east is violent is because of the plethora of vassal states courtesy of Uncle Sam.

Even insane Iran is just a US vassal state that happened to backfire because the locals got wise after their democratically elected leader was couped in operation Ajax.

    • Egypt is a US shill under Sisi, who also couped the previous democratically elected leader

    • Iraq is a pacified US shill state

    • KSA, UAE, Oman, Qatar, and Kuwait are oil suppliers that get protected by the US military, so they each have an inhumane monarchy of former desert bedouins

    • Israel is the military buyback outpost

    • Jordan is an Israeli shill state (so by extension the US)

    • Syria is actually the only Russian shill

    • Lebanon is just a proxy zone between Israel, Syria, and Iran

    • Yemen is split in half by already explained oil shills and the Houthis which is their resistance/insurgency group

Anyways, not exactly fake but I remember reading a Mark Twain “book” that took snippets from several stories instead of just the whole thing for each one, so a lot of it lacked proper context which was really annoying. It could have easily fit them in, so no idea if it was trying to censor something or was made as like a sample guide for writing.

  • I remember when Microsoft made a big deal about this on Windows and then their “implementation” was making the local signon a number PIN.

And not a proper separate auth operation lol. You either set up almost everything with the PIN or use a regular password, not both. Makes it useless on enterprise.

Realistically we should all be using a key/pass vault since that would make using passkeys much easier, but that’s too complicated for the internet in 2004 2024.

If it were me, I’d just issue everyone a yubikey.

  • Explorer has had so many dependencies attached to it that if even one of them sneezes, the entire desktop environment crashes and has to restart.

Actually insane when you think about it. Why the hell is a file explorer the root process of the desktop???

I’ve only ever forced stopped thunar once and it was because I was messing with some thumbnail settings. Naturally the rest of my system worked as normal, as well as the other thunar windows open lol.
