The thing that annoys me the most is how it cares about whitespace/carriage returns. I remember back in college when I was taking a CS class, learning Python and writing the Code on a Windows PC, emailing it to myself, and then attempting to run the code on Linux. Before I learned about the carriage return conversions, I remember having to rewrite about 75 lines of code before I got it to run. 🤬

  • I’m a Linux SysAdmin, so I’m well versed in Linux. My server, laptop and phone all run it, but my desktop still runs Windows 10 because modding Skyrim (via MO2) is a pain in the ass (apparently there have been a lot of improvements in this area in the past year or two since I last tried).

Windows is such a garbage OS. For the past week or so, ModOrganizer2 would hang for a few seconds anytime I attempted to explore the files of a mod I had installed. MO2 gave no hints regarding what the issue was. I searched for an answer last night and found it on GitHub: a disconnected network drive is the cause…even though everything I was accessing is local 🤦‍♂️ This apparently affects various programs and isn’t specific to MO2, since the person that posted the solution found the original solution in a Steam bug report from over 2 years ago!

I unmounted the network drive and everything was back to normal! Fucking garbage OS.

  • The reason for this is because switching from Windows to Linux is a lot bigger change, requiring a fair amount of technical know-how, and even knowing that Linux exists in the first place. Swapping browsers is easy in the technical sense, it’s breaking the habit that’s the hard part, but if they piss people off enough all it takes is uninstalling it in order to break the habit, not a drastic paradigm shift. I’m a long time Chrome user, like over a decade and with the recent “unverified download” nonsense unless you enable their invasive tracking has put me over the edge. I had both the Chrome and Firefox icons pinned to the taskbar and just out of habit kept clicking it, I finally removed it last week

  • I was just talking with a friend who is a software dev (I’m a Linux Engineer so I do software as part of my job, just not my main focus) and we were just commiserating on how 75-80% of the world doesn’t understand that “AI” is just regurgitating information it has collected and it’s not like Jarvis or Skynet and thinks for itself.

I agree that the term “sexual abuse” is definitely misleading, I think “sexual exploitation” is better. I agree with you it’s no different than face swapping, but the difference is that it’s a lot easier for the general public to do it now than it was 5 or 10 years ago. It’s also pretty fucked that a fake image of you could potentially put you in “hot water” years down the road and you have zero control over it.

While I definitely hate the “AI bubble” that has grown tremendously over the past 2-3 years, we definitely need to figure out how to place limits on it before shit really gets out of hand in another year or two. The problem is that anyone that knows anything about this stuff doesn’t work in or for the government. The woman in the article that said that this needs to be regulated at every point of course doesn’t work in tech, she works for some rights organization 🤦‍♂️
