1·4 months agoJust a reminder to everyone to be civil (according to community rules) but also use the block function when needed. This is both possible for posters and commentors you don’t like to see. From the mastodon.world code of conduct: “Do not report every post that upsets you. Please report posts that violate our rules but for others that you may find distasteful, or just don’t like, use the tools available to you. You can block the user or mute the conversation.”

Technology@lemmy.world•Bye Bye Big Tech: How I Migrated to an almost All-EU Stack (and saved 500€ per year)English
31·4 months agoMan I just love the browser and its features. But it does help that they are EU based and have some pretty well known browser veterans as founders. Also they are quite supportive in their forums and I feel they try to be as transparent as possible in their blog posts. E.g. they made clear to support Manifest V2 as long as it is somehow possible while also keep on improving their builtin ad blocker (but we all know nothing can keep up with uBlock)

2·8 months agoWell you have your “home” lemmy instance which you are logged in to. Everything you see goes through your home instance. But many things you will see originate on a completely different “remote” instance. Your home instamce nees to be federated and synced in order to the everything that happens in the remote/origin instance
Not sure about the current situation. However in general Twitch uses server side injected ads (SSAI), which are basically unblockable. They can however be bypassed (using different methods, each having it’s own pros and cons). Anway there is a very active twitch ad blocking community that will explain everything: https://github.com/pixeltris/TwitchAdSolutions Most reliably is having either an http proxy or a vpn in a country that is not served ads.
Well that is actually quite dynamic as sometimes advertisers suddenly choose to place an ad in somen fringe country like czech rep. or Georgia. Mostly those small eastern EU countries are not attractive enough for advertisers. For some reason I also never get ads with Luxembourg IP, even though they are one of the richest countries in the world. Probably too small of a traget audience.
I use my paid vpn extension (Nord) to select a Country for twitch.tv which isn’t served ads. However I would all my traffic go through that specific vpn as it causes trouble with other appe/pages. So being able to cnveniently switch my IP per domain is pretty nice sometimes.

You Should Know@lemmy.world•YSK: Upvotes and downvotes are public information on Lemmy
31·9 months agoI think they are referring to the point that you want your personal votes to be kept private. Some say it is a form of “cowardice” to not vote publicly.
Personally I see your point is very valid and at least this should be more actively described when signing up for Lemmy and that obviously your instance admins can see everything and you should be very careful (e.g. VPN) if you’d like to participate privately in a conversation. Maybe this is not the right platform for you then ufortunately. Everything in life has its pros and cons and certainly Lemmy is not perfect.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•introducing copyparty, the FOSS file serverEnglish
6·10 months agoI agree but it’s still in an early development state. Not really usable for everyday work let alone most people never heard about it 😅 But yeah still cool to mention it under “modern” browsers. I wish them good luck with the first alpha next year. I hope it’ll be successful.

You Should Know@lemmy.world•YSK about the GI Rights Hotline
212·11 months agoWell actually: “It was originally an initialism used in U.S. Army paperwork for items made of galvanized iron.[2] The earliest known instance in writing is from either 1906[3] or 1907.[2]” Also later on re-interpreted as “government issued” etc. but I guess today it just means US army soldier
btw. Metro 2033 Redux also for free on Steam.
Also on a side note, one of the coolest milsim/tactic shooters in recent years is also on sale: Insurgency Sandstorm. It even gets a big map/weapons update next week.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•Summit for Lemmy is now open sourceEnglish
15·1 year agoI love that you link Obtanium. This is the first time I saw an app dev actually linking to Obtanium. Getting your FOSS app update directly from the git repos without the google bs around it just seems logical.

There definitely an actively developped open source privacy focused period tracker available, go check it out: https://gitlab.com/bloodyhealth/drip But all data stays local on your device , which is of course good from privacy pov but if you are looking for something accessible from different devices then this might not be suitable.
