I installed it on Ubuntu server on my raspberry pi 4 and it took a couple months to fall over and become useless.

I’ve been running their OS since then and it has been absolutely rock solid. It’s been 5 or 6 years now, all I do is add more devices occasionally and update it when it occurs to me.

If you have a life and you don’t absolutely love tuning your OS for special purposes in ways that are already solved problems, the hass os image is the way to go.

I also haven’t used it in a few years. Chat systems in general don’t cooperate with the way my brain works.

It’s kinda like lemmy here, but a little more pain because not only do you have to pick your provider, but you also need to be very mindful of how your key pair is managed. Like… don’t just uninstall a client without going through the effort of trusting and verifying a new one first, or you may lose the ability to decrypt a lot of history and also break trust with relationships you have.

Security first is a major concern in the system, so it doesn’t leave a lot to the imagination unfortunately.

That said, once you convince yourself to set it up, and convince anyone else to do the same, it works pretty nicely. It’s like an inner venn diagram of discord, telegram and IRC.

Haha maybe I’ll get around to it. You should probably feel nothing for my second grade self watching that movie, it didn’t have much of an impact on me other than thinking it’s funny I watched it.

You can be the change you seek here by suggesting a course of action that isn’t asking others to suggest a course of action to you. If you’re seeking a course of action, you can try asking here.

But commenters on tech news aren’t likely to be expert activists, especially in whatever issue is your top concern.

My best advice to you is

• practice acceptance of reality, not as defeat but as the first step to understanding and deciding an action

• determine how much capacity you, as a person, have to contribute to a cause

• determine one cause you care about and can be effective at contributing to

After doing those things, SEEK OUT like minded groups who have leadership and self discipline and are effective.

If you don’t want to network in person locally, you will need to find a forum whose sole purpose is activism and direct action.

It will not be brought to you, and you will not be recruited. You have to actively go seek it out.

The forum you’re on now is called “technology”. Similar ones, like “news” or literally any other topic that doesn’t solely focus on mobilizing activists will not get you what you’re asking for here.

Ya a lot of folks make a lot of poor choices. I’m sure I do too.

I like to take note of any way I could have done something better in a ride, even if it’s just something simple like getting passed by a car before I knew it was there – a mild reminder to always be checking the 360.

Yeah my original comment here was a lot more breathy than it should have been. I’m not critical of the article it’s definitely uplifting and accurate. But I think new battery tech on the grid would see usefulness even if renewables weren’t inconsistent, but that’s a whole different topic I suppose.

The funny thing about bikes is they’re all so fun. I put over 300 highway miles on my klx300 over this past weekend and that hardened my nerves way more than the capabilities of my z900 did!

The great thing about higher performance bikes is that, while they can certainly go way faster than we should ever ask them to, they can also maneuver way better than we should ever ask them to.

They all bring me so much joy in so many different ways. I absolutely appreciate my sport bike like an engineering marvel (I’m pretty simple), and getting slightly naughty on it when no one is around is definitely thrilling, but honestly the bike rides so nice that even low speeds feels so good, and high speeds don’t actually feel so high. The little bike is kind of the opposite in a way that’s also fun anyway. It feels naughty even when it’s not haha.

I still think of myself as a beginner but I am obsessed with doing everything I can to be as safe as possible, thankfully I also think learning safety is fun!

In October 2022 I bought a 2001 Kawasaki w650, that was my first bike since I briefly tinkered with dirt bikes about 10 years prior. I sold that this spring.

That same year in November I picked up an 82 Kawasaki ke100 and a 2004 KLR650.

This spring I picked up a 2019 Kawasaki z900rs and a 2017 KTM 125 SX.

A few weeks ago I picked up a KLX300, which is the first new thing I ever purchased, and I just finished putting the 650-ish break-in miles on it yesterday, so I’m really excited to take that on the trails now.

I think what I’m finding is riding very different bikes in different ways teaches you all kinds of different skills that are transferrable to all of them in subtle ways.

What are you riding on now?

I guess my point is that I don’t think batteries necessarily compete with natural gas, but they do help make renewables slightly more competitive with natural gas.

Batteries and gas aren’t really comparable so I’m guessing this means batteries are expanded at a rate 10x higher than natural gas is being expanded, which makes sense because natural gas is such a mature staple that it doesn’t have that much opportunity growth.

Batteries are also not an energy source, but storage.

(Yeah I guess that’s technically true of all energy sources, but batteries are more like a tank than a consumable…)

Of course adding batteries to store energy from off peak renewables to ready them for the peak is the point of this, but I would point out I don’t think anything prevents charging batteries from fossil-fuel generated electricity. I wouldn’t be surprised if an economic equilibrium dictates this to be the case, even.

I think batteries will be highly valued equipment as a smoothing function to help reduce heavy load wear on any kind of generating equipment to help with peak loads, regardless of what’s charging them… possibly allowing fossil burning plants to run closer to a base load level at all times.
