  • eh even at $100 I wouldn’t. it’s a 15 year old Alienware…

so lets look at the specs online: At most you’re going to get 16gb of ram out of it. that’s it. it’s not able to do more so it’s at most 16gb but likely might be 8gb. The processor is a gen 4 i7 The GPU is likely going to be at most a gtx 970 so again, meh.

Nvidia cards don’t have a bad rep on Linux but you’re going to struggle with a 15+ year old dedicated gpu.

Honestly at $100 you can probably find a better spec’d laptop online via a third market like craigslist or whatever is popular where you are. Sure this thing is only $100 but getting it up and running and gaming is probably going to cause you more headaches than what it’s worth.

if you want to get a cheap PC for your son I’d suggest you wait and save up a bit more to get something better/more recent. a 15 year old PC isn’t going to last you long.

I tried it, paid for it, cancelled it. I tested it with the same queries with ddg, startpage, brave, and qwant via 4get. The results were essentially the same. Kagi did provide more context in the description of the results but it wasn’t anything I would pay a premium for. the majority of features I just didn’t use, the assistant and fastgpt were a waste, lenses were fine and having fediverse on by default is neat but nothing I’d call home about.

If it were cheaper sure, I might stick with it but I can’t justify the price to anyone wanting to use a search engine. $5 for 300 searches a month is a joke. I also don’t like the fact that if you want to pay with something other than a credit card (paypal, venmo, etc) you get charged extra cause Kagi doesn’t want to eat the fees. Also there’s zero option to opt out of paying for the “AI” features, you can turn them off sure…but you’re still going to pay for them.

If your internet usage consists of constant searching and LLM use for searching then sure, you’re going to be paying $10+ a month and be happy with it. But there was nothing Kagi offered that knocked my socks off. if anything, felt like I was getting scammed.

  • Up until a few weeks ago I was running my own private SearXNG instance and it’s not just you, even I noticed on my OWN instance that it had progressively gotten worse. Initially it was great so I just left it be but then the performance and results just became horrible. It was hit or miss if the thing would even load or not when other instances on my server like my akkoma, piefed, redlib, forgejo, etc all ran smooth as silk.

Eventually I ditched SearXNG and switched to 4get which much better and faster results. thing never goes down and the search results have been fantastic.

  • honestly it’s better to just host your own private instance as if you want a lemmy and mastodon instance that others can also set up you not only have to admin it you also have to moderate it.

Also keep in mind it’s NOT just actual people signing up but you also have to deal with all the bots which WILL register en masse to your instances. a lot of people won’t mention this. bots flock to this stuff like flies on shit. It’s not worth it unless you plan on really dedicating the time to actively admin your instances.

I run Akkoma instead of Mastodon and Piefed instead of lemmy. both of which were easier to setup than mastodon/lemmy and less resource heavy.

  • The Application is the easiest part to build out of all of this. that’s not an issue at all. How are you going to ensure that A. Restaurants are going to want to work with you B. how are you going to get drivers to want to work for you C. how are you going to ensure that food will be safe once it leaves a restaurant until it gets to a customers door D. how are you going to ensure that everyone involved in this process gets paid.

Whose on the hook if the driver decides to eat the food that they pick up? How do you refund the customer? do you pay the Restaurant? etc, etc, etc

  • your last point is key. Bluesky has notoriously horrible moderation and a CEO that refuses to acknowledge it and mocks users that do.

This reeks of Bluesky letting “the babies have their bottles” so to speak but I feel it’s a waste of time. Bluesky users already heavily depend on lists to build their own communities in a way. It’s almost to the point on there where if something you dislike shows up in your feed well that’s your fault and the communities as a whole for not almost shadow banning an account via the god knows how many block lists users have created. “disliking” a post isn’t going to do anything. it’s stupid.

Hell Bluesky users have been trying to get some transphobic journalist banned from the platform for well over a year now and the CEO of Bluesky has essentially said “lol, nope, you all suck. don’t like it? stop posting in protest.” When Bluesky users are offered an alternative with better moderation that THEY can control i.e. Mastodon they tut their tongues and roll their eyes saying “eww the linux of social media”.

so again, let the babies have their bottles. it’s not going to do anything because Bluesky has clearly said they don’t want to do anything.

  • Well the Wachowskis have said in the past that The Matrix Online is canon as they wanted to hand the story of The Matrix over to the fans/players to do with it as they wished. They approved of Morpheus’ death in the game so I suppose that’s why it’s kinda vague in Resurrections as to how he died. Either because of the events of the game where he was killed by an assassin or simply from old age.

As far as how he was reborn in the movie he was basically “coded in” to a “Matrix Modal” by Neo and the Machines. Resurrections Morpheus was like a hybrid of Morpheus and Agent Smith. The whole explanation was the machines needed Neo to kind of remember but not quite fully remember that he was the One because it generated a lot of power for them combined with keeping Trinity in close proximity. So the Machines were kind of constantly dangling a carrot in front of Neos face. They also had to keep constantly changing his DSI (Digital Self Image) so the humans would have a hard time finding him.

So the Morpheus in Resurrections wasn’t the “real” morpheus but a program that had Morpheus’ “code”. that’s why he didn’t have a body in the real world because unlike Neo and Trinity there was no body to put him in.
