Even more ridiculous since a 1.4x performance increase is already incredible news for anyone who makes regular of this.
If someone found a software optimization that improved, say, blender performance by 1.4x people would be shouting praises from the rooftops.
It definitely would not be, regardless of whatever “done correctly” means. Solar noon at exactly 12:00 is only going to happen on a single line of longitude. If you have a timezone centered on that line and exactly 15° (one hour) wide then solar noon will be up to 30 minutes away from 12:00 depending on your east/west position in that timezone.
It was exactly this realization that the numbers were arbitrary and 12:00 didn’t need to be solar noon that led to the creation of timezones in the first place, so that it’s not 4:14 in Norwich while it’s 3:52 in Birmingham and just travelling from city to city doesn’t mean you’re changing your watch constantly and it becomes actually possible to write a sensible rail schedule.
Timezones are already a step toward an arbitrary standard time for the purposes of making communication easier and not needing to change your watch just because you moved around. UTC everywhere would just be another larger step in that already established direction.
I don’t see how dealing with that is any worse than dealing with time zones.
Downside of UTC everywhere: you might have to set your alarm for a different time when you travel.
Upsides: Never need to account for timezones in communication. Never need to change a clock, ever.
They make sense because the numbers won’t be arbitrary.
But they are. There’s no changing that. They’re arbitrary now. They’d be arbitrary if we had UTC everywhere. We’re not out here using sundials to set our clocks, 12:00 is not solar noon more often than it is.
Or we’ll realize that the specific numbers are arbitrary and use UTC everywhere.
I know someone who has a company with the word “technology” in the name, like “Smith Technology”. They use .technology because it’s literally the name of the company, which I think is good for the brand identity, but have run into issues where people just don’t think it’s a correct url because “smith.technology” looks like it’s missing its TLD.
Regardless of whether the gaming market itself is growing or not you can still compare to Nvidia to see how AMD is doing within that environment. If no one was buying any GPUs Nvidia would also be showing a dip, but they’re not.
That Concord episode of Secret Level is going to be pretty awkward.
Yeah, there are some disappointing limitations for sure, but it definitely is interesting, and does at least feel more like a human player than the normal CPU opponents.
…if a somewhat schizophrenic one.
I don’t know what it’s using specifically under the hood, but in Street Fighter 6 Capcom recently added a new AI opponent you can fight that they say is trained on actual player ranked matches and fights more like a human opponent. You can even have it try to mimic your own playstyle if you’ve played enough.
It can do some odd things and its mimicry isn’t perfect. But it definitely doesn’t feel like the typical high difficulty CPU opponent which uses things like input reading to react faster than a real player ever could.
…it also has been seen teabagging.
This is my current best use for it as well. Having a unique portrait for every named NPC helps them stand out quite a bit better and the players respond much more strongly to all of them.
Sounds way more interesting than most IT work as well. I’d definitely rather do some investigative work like this than a typical parade of password resets, email assistance, and software installations.
People complain when EA and Ubisoft do it too. As for Valve, what game that’s not on Steam requires a Steam login? That’s the issue here, being required to use their platform account when not on their platform.
Yes, they were, and that highlights the problem really. Nvidia’s grip on mind share is so strong that AMD releasing cards that matched or exceeded at the top end didn’t actually matter and you still have people saying things like the comment you responded to.
It’s actually incredible how quickly the discourse shifted from ray tracing being a performance hogging gimmick and DLSS being a crutch to them suddenly being important as soon as AMD had cards that could beat Nvidia’s raster performance.
All of this came before I was asked about it.
I remember running screen irssi on a separate computer and sshing into the server, reconnecting the screen with irssi in it.

I’m not depressed, at least I don’t think I am. I don’t really feel sad.
Society equating depression with sadness is a great disservice to the condition. It’s quite common for it to present as just … nothing. An emotional void where you might expect emotions to be. Things that would be expected to make you happy just don’t. Things that would make you sad, the same. Your feelings are depressed in the sense that their impact is just muted across the board.
A lack of motivation is also a very common indicator. You’re just missing the drive to do something because the emotional rewards that you expect to happen when you accomplish your goals just aren’t there.
“Easy answers” in that they’re simple, fit into their existing worldview, and don’t require them to change anything. Not easy as in the easiest to find. That’s why it’s a conspiracy, the simple answers that they want to be correct are being hidden from them.
“Imitation” very strongly implies that it is not in actuality the thing being imitated. Imitation butter is not butter. Imitation crab is not crab.
These medicines are the same chemical, therefore the same product.
I will however grant that while calling store brand painkillers “imitation ibuprofen” is nonsense, calling them “imitation advil” is okay because advil is a brand. Though in my opinion it should be avoided because it carries an implication of inferiority that is simply not the case.
I wouldn’t buy a new Seagate drive, let alone a refurbished one. Every Seagate I’ve ever owned died in less than five years. Every WD I’ve owned lasted until long after their capacity was so far outpaced by newer drives as to be useless.
Anecdotal, yes, but it’s happened enough to me that I’ve been soured on them for life.
Completely anecdotal but I was able to add my brother-in-law to my Steam family without any problem and he lives about 125km from me.
The requirement is absolutely something more arcane than “same household” and Valve are keeping quiet on the actual specifics. It’s possible that the fact that I’ve been there multiple times and have logged into Steam on their wifi in the past was enough to confirm that this is a place with close relation to me. Who knows though.
