It is not even a good one. Is this really the most convincing argument the CTO of one of the most aggressive tech companies can come up with? Are these people just facades because with mental skills like this I don’t think they can even run a lemonade stand. What even makes them useful, connections? Willingness to sacrifice their humanity for profit? A never ending obedience to shareholders?

“A cure for cancer” is such a magical nonsense phrase. We can already cure a lot of cancers. There are tons of people living healthy lives after surviving cancer. And we know more and more about how to prevent it (like not smoking). But they want magic.

Even bigger nonsense is the claim that AI will solve global warming. We already know the solution to global warming. We’re just not doing anything with it, because of destructive business interests.

Would it perhaps leave Vegans in place? Especially vegans that eat and farm plants that remove more emissions than trees do?

Probably not, vegans still contribute to global warming, just less so in one area. Even if there existed a person who made perfect consumption choices in every case, they still occasionally need to travel by motor, they use some form of heating, and they use buildings which used cement at some point in their construction or during renovations. Also, we’re all pretty inefficient digesters, and the more fiber you eat, the more methane you emit.

What about a vegan solarpunk Amish person then? Especially if they plant more trees than what was used by their log cabin?

I’m pretty sure an Amish vegan would starve/freeze to death (especially if you consider handmade fabrics growable in the climates they live in or transported without the use of engines or horses), but if one existed, they’d also have to refuse to pay their taxes. They’d also obviously have to be one of the Amish who don’t use modern medical care or all manner of modern technology for work. I’m also not sure how resource intensive Amish tools are- if they have traditional blacksmiths, where do they get the metal?

But really, it depends on your inputs: the quickest/simplest ways to cool the planet would also probably render it unlivable for most humans- there are probably a few ways an AI could generate massive ash clouds that block out enough sunlight to bring the temperature down. In that scenario, there would probably be some humans who survive, but they’d probably be in places with very small and non resource intensive populations, so most of eastern North America is automatically out.

Pray tell how any non-tree plant removes emissions unless you chuck it into a five-kilometers-deep mine.

Trees specifically only ‘remove emissions’ if you plant more of them than get rotten or burnt.

Algae gets eaten by plankton, which get eaten by whales, which then fall to the bottom of the ocean when dead, which then get eaten by scavengers that live in the ocean floor, which then turn into sediment when they die.

Also, any plants you eat get turned into shit, which can then be used as fertilizer mixed into the dirt to grow more plants.

Do oceans not have bacteria that break down organic matter? Does ocean water not contain oxygen that combines with carbon during decomposition?

plants you eat get turned into shit, which can then be used as fertilizer mixed into the dirt to grow more plants.

Is animal flesh not turned into shit? Are fertilizers carbon? Or do they rather provide nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium? And even if it is carbon, does shit dumped into fields not rot?

Your last proposition implies that it’s the continuous production of shit and new plants that’s keeping the carbon bound. But it means then that the humans are actually the store of carbon. Maybe we should chuck humans into five-kilometers-deep mine shafts.

            @Dojan

Parts of it are even pretty recent. The Friedman Doctrine, for example. “a company’s social responsibility is to increase its profits and maximize shareholder value”. I call it the worst idea in capitalism. It’s what’s forcing companies to pollute and lie about it, to bribe politicians and to create misinformation campaigns. As long as it’s legal, it is their responsibility to do all of that.

The idea stems from 1970 and became popular during the 1980s. It is the most harmful idea in capitalism (which is not short of harmful ideas).

Also he fails to name one noted in the article but they went ahead and published it anyways because fuck journalism I guess. He is lying, business insider has never been a reputable source for news

I started self destructing since AI has slithered its way into aspects of my life that gave me a reason to exist.

Not because I think it’ll save me but because I just don’t give a shit about anything anymore thanks to it’s gross existence.

Bryan Johnson thought peptides would make him live forever. He ended up triggering and autoimmune disease that would likely end up killing him.

Of course, these bros must know tobacco smoke causes more diseases than just cancers.

I love how he blames ‘the stress of being a new father twenty years ago’ with this new autoimmune disease, even though he’s been bombarding his body with foreign invaders, taking a hundred pills a day, changing the markers on his blood and lymph, replacing everything he can inside himself, and living in terror of his immortality for a decade.

‘it wasn’t all this pinhead horrorshow in a lab coat I’m doing, it was my fucking son I’ve always hated.’ what an insufferable twat.

Also, they haven’t heard of tar in your lungs, stained teeth, addiction, etc etc?

Anyway, just seems to prove how disconnected they are from reality, and how eager to press the ‘easy’ button while squinting to pretend there are no consequences.
