I’m afraid to think what ‘Vinylized’ means, considering the track was only ever officially released on CD or digital records.

The last couple selected recommendations I got from Youtube were Tribal Baroque’s ‘Gypsy Dance’ and Hermeto Pascoal’s ‘Música da Lagoa (Sinfonia do Alto Ribeira)’ — both only five days ago. Just those two justify the years I’ve spent nurturing my algo.

For better or worse, the recs are the killer feature of Youtube. One has to look through some junk to find the gems, but they are there.

I never bothered with the ‘don’t recommend’ thing, except maybe when Youtube was stuck for weeks in a bout of Louis Rossmann vids after I watched one or two of them. Instead, I just choose what I actually watch or add to playlists.

I tend to pay attention to that, and I’m perpetually confused by microphones, perhaps because of very limited personal experience with them. On one hand, there’s the perennial advice of almost throating them when one speaks. On the other hand, for example, I’m watching through pretty much every clip on the StandupComedy subreddit, and the comedians straight up move the mic away when shouting louder — like e.g. Raanan Hershberg does. Perhaps Wobble can just belt out in baritone without much need for a mic, who knows.

There are also all the times when the voices are recorded only on boom mics, and sound fine.

I have no idea what strings JW is fiddling though?

I mean, he’s fingering the fuck out of his bass there. I can’t quite judge the playing myself, but there are comments in there saying the bassline is not so easy as he makes it seem.

Anyway, my bottom-of-the-barrel standard for live tv performances is The Selecter’s ‘On My Radio’ on TotP. Anything above that is an improvement.

Anyway, I have some cool classic post-punk coming up in the queue to post, you might want to keep an eye out — I’ll mark the genre in the posts, as usual.

Btw, I must also note that I’ve gotten some cool music recommendations from Youtube, despite having quite snobby and unusual tastes — mostly by the virtue of jealously curating my algo for years by not opening any random stuff under my account (usually using an incognito tab for that). I think it might also be possible to do that by just using the recs under videos.

Fun fact: Youtube tracks recommendations for a non-logged-in session. With the help of Firefox’s ‘Multi-Account Containers’ that isolate a site in some tabs from normal cookies, I one ran a logged-out Youtube session for a month or two just to listen to some eurodance/europop tunes from my youth without polluting the main account.

So you could in fact have proper personalized recs without logging in, except for videos that are marked as adult or if using a VPN or Tor.

Well, you can use my approach if you ever wish to stray outside the defined set of channels. Personally I prefer to collect videos all over and keep only a few subscriptions.

‘Visions of You’ has a cool live version where he’s fiddling the strings. Although, since it was on tv, he might’ve been just miming to a backing track — but it seems that the things are plugged in, which is effort that tv crews often skirted in those days.

‘The Sun Does Rise’ with Dolores O’Riordan is also nice.

Pro tip: if you still want to use YouTube’s recommendations in some way, create lists for the videos to watch in your notes app of choice. Then under videos that you liked, look through the recommendations for related videos and copy promising ones into a list by topic (an extension like ‘Copy URL To Clipboard’ can help with this, especially if using Markdown or Org-mode). I’ve been using this system for ages with YouTube’s built-in playlists, and it worked great — I have probably a whole year’s worth of videos to watch full-time.

On the phone, you can use NewPipe or Invidious. Particularly, if using Firefox on Android, you can trick it into installing a desktop extension like ‘Redirector’ that would open Invidious instead of YouTube. And for copying page links, I use the Automate app by sharing the tab to it.

Also, if you use Android (a Pixel phone in particular), it might be possible that Google would confirm your account by sending a verification notification to the phone. This technically doesn’t give them info that you haven’t already explicitly provided, though of course they know the phone number anyway from said phone.

Yeah, I think you’ll be happy with the bass in Coconuts. =)

Forgot to mention NULL’s album ‘Act of Love’, it’s pretty good at the same kind of thing.

If you dig dubby stuff, check out also Jah Wobble and Bill Laswell’s ‘Radioaxiom – A Dub Transmission’, and perhaps John Zorn and Laswell’s ‘The Stalking’. Wobble and Laswell are both mega-bassists.

It’s more that Om don’t do noodling, and focus on bass riffage instead. Coconuts are kinda the same way. Karla Kvlt’s ‘Thunderhunter’ is also pretty good.

Weeping Sores, Foreshadower, Blóð and Her Highness may be in that vein too, but I keep forgetting how exactly they sound. They’re more doom / sludge.

Stabat Mater is a good example of how I like doom sound, but turns out it’s a project by a dude who’s in Nazi-metal scene, so I’m out some nice tunes. :\

This is the info that should be in the post title. Including the genre, so I don’t have to wonder if it’s the 537th indie-rock band that does nothing for me.

Apparently this album is a 2014 reworking of their first full-length record, from 2003. Which explains the characteristic electro-industrial sound, which imo was rather meh but kept the overall scene afloat for quite a while.

Well, it went nowhere on my part, I attempted and failed. Then earlier this year I was making a post here about the mix, went to MixesDB again, and lo and behold, there was a considerably more complete tracklist there. Looks like it’s still getting updated, but doesn’t yet have all the tracks.

Well, it could actually be that I’m due for a relisten — put on ‘Caught Between Worlds’ after posting the comment above, and it turns out that it’s very stoner-riffy. I happen to like that style, with Om and Buried at Sea being my favorites in stoner/doom, and Unleashed on the death-metal side.

Ah, frankly with Stinking Lizaveta I just grind this album — listened to some of their live tunes and whatnot, but keep returning to this record. ‘Caught Between Worlds’ is also alright, but I don’t remember if it has much in the way of blues.

You mean where in this album? Check out the two tracks I linked in the post text. However, it’s rather two standalone bluesy tracks than a proper mix of stoner and blues. But they’re good.

For quite different blues-metal, try Mamaleek’s ‘Diner Coffee’ and ‘Vida Blue’. Some of their older albums like ‘Come and See’ and ‘Via Dolorosa’ have bluesy undertones too.

Oxbow’s ‘The Narcotic Story’ has kind of a mix of blues with sludge/doom/noise-rock. So far it’s the only band I’ve found that’s somewhat similar to Mamaleek.

I don’t know how you manage to keep being confused about this whole deal. When you buy a disk, you don’t care what’s in the empty space. You format it as an encrypted disk by writing a few sectors. When you want to throw it out, you delete the keys that decrypt what you wrote over the life of the disk, and perhaps wipe the sectors containing encryption metadata. What is unclear about this?

Besides, when the disk is configured as encrypted, the junk in the empty sectors can’t be read by decrypting it. Unless it’s software encryption and you bypass it by poking the disk directly, you can’t read anything from those sectors. Which, again, contain either noise, or what the possible previous owner has written there.
