Dedicated fans have finished the server emulator. For now it’s single player only, but they want to release multiplayer later.

You have to get the actual game files yourself (for obvious reasons), but you can find them easily, for example in the internet archive.

I’m in the middle of the campaign right now, and so far it works flawlessly.

And since this was the only racing game I played on a regular basis, I am happy! Fuck you Ubisoft! Thank you dedicated fans!!

This is less a “fuck you ubisoft” moment and more a “we need to appease the fans so they forget about the movement” moment

I mean, good on people getting this up and running, but “in case you’ve been living under a rock” may overrepresent how much the average person wants to play The Crew.

Fair, but I wanted to play it again and had been living under a rock, who knows who else missed this.

And the deactivation of this game started the StopKillingGames campaign (which stays important regardless), there might be at least of few like me out there.

No, for sure, it’s a good thing. I just found the expression funny in the context. The Crew is what it is.

Yeah I’m feeling a little out of the loop here. I know of The Crew only because of it being the flashpoint starting Stop Killing Games. Is it supposed to be a timeless classic I’m missing out on?

It’s a fun game with a huge open world, but it’s not a classic per se. It’s just nice to see a dead game running again.

If Ubisoft had done this from the start… But it brought awareness to the topic, so in the end it’s good that they stayed true to their philosophy (of being dicks).

That’s awesome. Server emulation is a ton of work. I’ll be amazed if they actually release multiplayer though.

Too bad it doesn’t work for console though. Server emulators are almost always PC only, and in some very extremely rare cases, PC and PS3/Original Xbox.

I guess it’s at least nice for preservation, even if little progress has been made on consumer rights.

If the server endpoint is the same you could try a DNS rebind? A pihole or adguard should be able to redirect that and I guess the fan made one is a bit more lenient when it comes to that kinda stuff

Not for modern Xbox titles, because Xbox online commectivity travels through the Xbox Live API, like Steam games often use Steam’s API. PlayStation never really had a central online service, and if they did it was always garbage/insecure.

Sure, developers could try to emulate modern Xbox Live API, but since it is still currently in active use, Microsoft could easily shut it down like Blizzard does with WoW server emulators all the time.

Yeah I got mildly excited when I read the title, and now I’m just mildly irritated.

Good for pc players though, it’s something!

If you have a PC or Laptop there is a good chance you could get it running, the game is pretty “old” and doesn’t scream for a high end gaming rig. Maybe that would be an option.

Yeah, a pc that runs the Crew well would be fairly cheap now. If you can’t just get one donated to you that would otherwise be going to the dump, picking one up from a garage sale or something would be pretty cheap. And you can hook a pc to a TV, set Steam to launch with Windows and enter bigscreen mode when it does. Steam bigscreen mode is used with a controller and has an option to turn off the computer in it’s menu. So you could do without a keyboard and mouse 99% of the time.
