Anyone can set up an instance and federate with the other instances. But instances can also de-federate with specific instances. For example most instances have de-federated from hexbear and threads so posts made to them won’t show up for users who use lemmy.world for example.

It’s like Reddit, but not owned by a large faceless corporation intent on using it for social engineering. That being said, if you disagree with the political ideology of some instances they’ll give you a ban for racism and not qualify it. Eg don’t talk badly about Russia or Palestine on lemmy.ml posts. Generally, be nice and people will reciprocate. Except lemmy.ml.

I’m no Marxist. I’m also not American. But I’m pretty sure it’s more about the erosion of human rights and the rise of an autocratic regime. Shit looks pretty bleak for Americans. To get an idea of what’s coming next Elon musk and Donald trump want to follow the insanity of Curtis yarvin. JD Vance and Peter Thiel want to follow project 2025. Neither end well.

As a European, it actually saddens me that America has gone this way.

The left have been warning about exactly what’s happening for years. Practically screaming it into traffic. Noone has listened, noone has taken us seriously, noone has thought to actually stand up to the oligarchs.

After a while you have to stop treating them like children who don’t know better and come to the realisation that they want the cruelty and oppression. They just don’t want it to happen to them.

Once the extrajudicial deportations start, anyone still onboard with it is by definition hostile and an active supporter of fascism. These people can’t be reasoned with.

Any one party political system can either fail or be maintained through violent oppression. People need to have a say in who represents them and what their values are.

A more sustainable solution than soviet style communism is to have proportional representation and work on instilling socialist virtues such as kindness, social responsibility, and fairness in the population. over time, the people in government will start to reflect those values.

In Norway your deposit is payed into a special account in your name and both parties have to agree to it’s release or settle in court. If the landlord takes some for repairs to abnormal damage (can’t charge for “normal wear and tear”) they have to provide proof that they used it for that (receipts etc).
