Yup. But if only 10% of those people decide to go fix a thing, instead of buying a new one, I guess that’s a win.

Haha yup. Either a hobby or a way to make youtube videos. The amount of channels where people just fix things and they have millions of views is a good sign… I just hope it evolves into people starting to think about this whole fixing of things and not just watch youtube videos.

Yeah I do that a lot. Luckily I have tools and some skills so I can do a lot of fixing myself. My current clothes washing machine was given to me, the shock absorbers had let the liquids out. I put some new O-rings in and a bit of hydraulic fluid. Its been working fine for 3 years now lol.

Yeah I have like 8 different ones. I have a fancy Mitutoyo in a nice wooden box that I use on special occasions and a whole bunch of others that are more or less beat up. I use the digital one’s for quick checks on stuff like brake disc thickness, where it doesnt matter if its off by 0.05mm etc

I don’t remember who it was, some youtube person, who said that he talks to chagpt when he goes to sleep. Like he goes to bed and starts chatting with the bot until he falls asleep. Thats completely bonkers to me.

Probably half a generation even. When I was a kid fixing things was normal. I remember when all the small electronic shops started to disappear. Only to be replaced by mobile phone screen switch shops lol.

I have one of those digital measurement calipers. I dropped it and the screen went wonky. I took it apart, one of the zebra connectors had moved a bit. Put it back in place, put the thing back together and I’m back to measuring with it. Didn’t cost anything except maybe 30 minutes of time.
I love the feeling of fixing shit.

Buy a thing, it stops working, throw the thing away, buy a new thing.
Seems like nobody fixes shit anymore. And yes, I know, companies make things as unfixable as possible. But I’m a weirdo who would rather pay a lot to fix a thing than throw it into the ocean and buy a new thing.

That’s mostly a American society thing though :P
Where I am, the government sends you a paper that has the tax %, you give that to your employer and they take the amount from your pay and send it to the government. If you have deductions you fill out a form and send it to the government.

There’s actually a surprising amount of people doing that haha. I’ve been lurking in writer groups and forums, I’d say about 10-15% of amateur writers do history stuff :)

There’s a huge amount of stupid questions. I know, because I ask them all the time.

I’ve never had any dream job or aspirations on getting to a high level. I sort of ended up being a truck driver, then I sort of accidentally started my own car mechanic business, I got enough of that and returned to truck driving.
I love history, I read all the time. I’ve been writing a history book, mostly for my own enjoyment. If I finish it, I’ll probably print a small amount of it and force them on my friends and family.
I don’t think its important to have career targets or goals but I do feel like its important to do something. If you have the means and finances to just hang out and learn stuff on your own, thats great. But with that freedom comes the risk of sort of closing yourself out of the world. Having a job or a hobby that gets you out of the house will keep that from happening.

I have a… xbox one x, I think? Is that a current gen console? I’ll have to make sure its offline if they try to insert that shit in my box.

It’s strange to think, but in the late 90s, albums were a bit of a cynical play. “I like this band or performer, let me get all that they have to give. I will spend $20+ on an album where a $5+ single might have given me the best they had to give.”
Yeah thats the thing. The artist has to be interested in making a album not just making a few hit songs and then filling up space. Luckily thats mostly a issue with pop music, the stuff I listen to tends to be more in line with creating a package.
One of the best things an album can do is put you into a sort of a trance, where you just listen and sink into the music. Only when the album ends you snap out of it, wipe the drool off your face and chest, get up and try to deal with life again lol.

I vote for listening to full albums as well.
As a youngster I used to have a massive playlist, only my favorite songs on it… These days I only listen to full albums, bad/weak songs and all. Its so much better. I’ve realised that a lot of the “bad” songs that I didn’t want to listen to as a youth, are not that bad actually.

I dunno but one of the main reasons I’ve cut my reddit time by ~90% and intend to drop it completely in the near future is because everyone there seems to think that anything that isn’t very obviously agreeing with them, is a invitation to some sort of debate.
Just the other day I give some additional information to someone, in a neutral tone and they got upset, called me dense and whatnot. I see it so much these days, users react negatively to a comment, and then the other person replies in a confused tone and apologizes… or responds in a equally angry manner.
I don’t have time or energy to all that anymore. But also, I hate everyone equally. I should move into a little cabin in the middle of the woods.

I get that for stuff like billboards and tv/radio commercials… But why does google and friends keep telling me about how they need my data to give me targeted ads? If they wanted to give me targeted ads, shouldn’t they first figure out how much I’m willing to pay, then get mad at me because I can’t pay for anything and maybe offer ads for mental health services?
I mean obviously the answer is that they just want the data for control and whatnot. But they should just drop the whole pretending to do targeted advertising. I would probably appreciate their honesty if they just told me that they need my data to grow their business, instead of giving me the “we care about your data” and targeted ads bullshit lol
But anyway, doesn’t really matter for me personally since I use ad blockers, if I can’t use ad blockers, I’ll stop using the service and go read a book.

I would have thought that posting to a English language forum would be done in English… I mean I know it doesn’t say specifically to post in English but I kinda assumed it.
I know we have all sorts of technology these days, but it should be on the OP to do the translation. I’ve noticed on reddit there has been a increase in people commenting on their native language, I asked on person, who was commenting in French, why do they not post in English. Apparently new reddit has a translation feature? I wouldn’t know because I used old.reddit. But anyway, I ended up just ignoring the comment rather than going through the trouble of opening a tab, copy pasting the comment, translating the comment, then writing my own comment and translating that.
Also, lots of translators are pretty shit at translating certain languages, for example my native language is Finnish and every time someone uses a translator to speak Finnish to me, its extremely obvious because its nowhere near correct.
So, to answer your question, yes we do have tech, but it fucks up all the time and its not our job to translate posts by others in a clearly English language forum.

EUUU! (said like a new jersey mafioso says “eyyy”)
If you don’t mind how it looks, as long as it works, check out James Channel on youtube. Dude cuts circuit boards with a angle grinder etc. Goes to show that you don’t necessarily need to be careful… as long as you know what and how to fix. And if you have a lot of hot glue.
