Hey everyone, I’m a beatmaker from Japan. Just wanted to share a new beat I’ve been working on lately. I tried blending a gentle Bossa Nova vibe with classic Boom Bap, and I’d really appreciate any thoughts or feedback you might have.

I hope you enjoy the chorus, I put a lot of heart into it.

I snapped that cover photo myself at Tennoji Zoo here in Japan.

He was a master at crafting smooth, organic grooves, so being compared to that vibe absolutely made my day.

He would have spit fire on your beat. Perfect blend of a cool groove and playful nostalgia, right up his alley.

Very 90s, nicely done. Could as well have been made by De-Phazz. The only way it would be more 90s is if you inserted a brief spoken break somewhere that sounds like it was recorded from radio.

Thanks a bunch, that means a lot! I love the radio sample idea definitely going to try weaving something like that into the next track.

Please post here again, I’d like to hear your explorations.

By any chance, are you familiar with the Ninja Tune label? They released a lot of instrumental hiphop back in the day, which is kinda in the spirit of your music, though more involved. E.g. Wagon Christ.

I’m actually quite familiar with Ninja Tune and Wagon Christ. Their early catalog has been a major source of inspiration for me, so drawing that comparison is a huge compliment. I’ll be sure to share my new material right here once it’s ready.

That’s great to hear. I lived through the mid-late 2000s on a diet of Ninja Tune and Bill Laswell, and it’s nice to see someone familiar with either of them. Also, I assume you know about Wagon Christ’s alternative identity, which was to spur Aphex Twin to switch from ambient to drill’n’bass of ‘Richard D. James Album’.

Those eras had such a rich soundscape. Bill Laswell is an absolute legend, so it’s super cool to connect with someone who appreciates his work as well. And yes, Luke Vibert’s influence on Aphex Twin and that whole drill’n’bass shift is fascinating history. The way those producers pushed boundaries back then is a constant inspiration for me.
