Hey everyone, I’m a beatmaker from Japan. Just wanted to share a new beat I’ve been working on lately. I tried blending a gentle Bossa Nova vibe with classic Boom Bap, and I’d really appreciate any thoughts or feedback you might have.
I hope you enjoy the chorus, I put a lot of heart into it.
I snapped that cover photo myself at Tennoji Zoo here in Japan.

Those eras had such a rich soundscape. Bill Laswell is an absolute legend, so it’s super cool to connect with someone who appreciates his work as well. And yes, Luke Vibert’s influence on Aphex Twin and that whole drill’n’bass shift is fascinating history. The way those producers pushed boundaries back then is a constant inspiration for me.
Check out Aphex and Vibert’s joint mix 2003-01-12 Switch at Studio Brussel, if you haven’t yet. It remains the best dj mix I’ve heard.
Really appreciate the heads up always love finding great sound recommendations. Looking forward to diving into it.
Ah, btw, Aphex Twin live at Day for Night Houston, 17 Dec 2016 is also quite something. I’m picking it apart for several months now, going through the artists that caught my ear in the mix.
As for the Switch mix, it’s a complete nightmare to try making a tracklist for: a couple years ago MixesDB didn’t have a proper tracklist, and I tried to just timestamp the tracks. Turns out the guys crossfaded them for minutes, played one track on top of another, and such.
That sounds like a serious labor of love. Deconstructing something with that level of overlap and blending takes incredible patience, but unearthing all those hidden details is such a rewarding endeavor.
Well, it went nowhere on my part, I attempted and failed. Then earlier this year I was making a post here about the mix, went to MixesDB again, and lo and behold, there was a considerably more complete tracklist there. Looks like it’s still getting updated, but doesn’t yet have all the tracks.
Totally feel you on that. Trying to map out something that dense will wear anyone down. At least the crowd solved part of the puzzle for you in the end, so you do not have to carry all that heavy lifting yourself anymore.
