It’s been on my ‘one of those days’ list for years now, and with Resonance out, they ran a $6 Steam sale for the original which put it in the impulse buy category. Fast forward a week and I’m out of town for work with some hotel time to kill so hooked my Steamdeck up to the TV and gave it a go and wow… I see what the hype is about.
Any non spoiler tips, tricks, or things I should be on the lookout for?
I downloaded the demo for Switch, it let me play up to the point where you are allowed to jump, then it was like no you’ve seen enough. Never looked at it again. Got it free from Epic so I guess I have no excuse not to try it now.
hey, looks like a neat game, I should check this out! I’ve never heard of this game
already in your library
Have you ever tried buying a key to save some bucks (because you’re a fucking cheapskate), redeem it…only to get greeted by “you already own this game”?
Then I usually gift the key to my bff. She thinks I’m such a generous nice guy, but sadly I’m just a dumb fuck that buys twice. Too often.
And I have learned nothing from it. Once I even bought the same key AGAIN the next day. I would actually save money buying directly on steam…
You Better Go Now Or You Won’t Have To Run With Your Head As Your Third Leg
The sequel just keeps the fun going!
Just started this week. It’s fun and atmospheric. But I hate the darkness and screen mobbing of effects. Like it gets so bad that you can’t see shit during a fight and somehow fall down endless voids that exist for reasons.
Take! Control! (it will take a while to get there and understand)
Until Resonant that that was my favorite music sequence in a game. Still is, but Resonant has some great moments like it. Honorable mention to the Rayman Legends music levels.
Put that word on a spoiler tag please 😊
And the reference. Ah what the hell, nevermind lol.
Alan wake also had something like that.
Read/watch everything. Maybe after dealing with an object of power, there’ll be a slightly redacted memo about it. There’s inner office politics in other memos.
The world building is absolutely amazing if you choose to be patient and read everything you can.
One of the best intros to a video game. Everything is designed as a specific narrative hook that really wants you to draw you in as much as possible. Even if you don’t want to follow all of them, you will be incredibly curious about some of them.
The director pictures at the beginning really got me.
Yeah I’m usually not a lore guy in games but man, this game did it amazingly well.
The piecemeal storytelling is very much like they did ot Horizon Zero Dawn.
I just completed Control Resonate and I was happy to see they kept that level of detail in the sequel.
Control is my favorite game ever.
This is one of the few games I’ve played where I’m constantly hoping to find new random scraps of paper. One of the most interesting places to explore.
Every paper I’ve found so far had such a cool little story snipped, I love it
I loved it, it’s a pretty unique experience. But to be totally honest, I hated it until I messed with the assist mode settings. So my personal tip, which is definitely not for everyone, is to completely customize those settings as much as you want. Some of the default combat and QOL features are way off in my opinion, and once I got over the shame of changing some fundamental settings, the game opened way up for me and I was able to get completely into the story.
The devs added the settings a year or two after the game’s release, so they must have been getting a lot of feedback.
Enjoy! You’re in for a wild ride.
Yeah, I’m with you on this, and wish I had done so in hindsight. The gameplay was interesting for about a couple of hours, but ultimately I think the game’s more about the graphics in the quieter moments–although as a raytracing showcase, it’s less impressive now than it was in 2019–and the wacky stuff it comes up with than anything.
What did you change? I played with mouse+kb and found it to be pretty easy tbh. Only some occasional Board Countermeasures seemed to be a bit unbalanced at the beginning.
Reload times, damage multipliers, you name it. I played it years ago so I don’t remember the exact specifics, but I came up with a sweet spot that worked for how I wanted to play.
That’s what’s so nice about these settings. You can gradually ease up the stuff you’re having trouble with, without cheesing it up all the way.

Oh nice, I’ll dig into those, thanks!

I don’t consider what I’m about to say a spoiler, but some people might.

There is a part of this game that is going to knock your socks off. It raised my bar for how good a section of a game could be. It’s up there with the intro to Ocarina of Time, sneaking into the second building in Into the Radius where things finally started to click but I was still scared shitless, and the lake scene in FFX, carved into my soul.
Once you’ve gotten to that part, let me know because I just like going back and forth about how incredible it is. If you get through a part of the game and wonder if you’ve gotten there, you haven’t gotten there yet. When you get there, you won’t wonder.

TAKE CONTROL!
I never got tired of the basic powers, breaking and throwing stuff always satisfying.
Also, /c/patientgamers
I found the game got more and more fun the further into the game I got, since more abilities started being unlocked that added much more variety to the gameplay.
I really ended up loving it by the time I finished it.
This was my experience with Shadow of Mordor.
This is another one I keep meaning to play
Looks like that is on my next to play list. I’ve been slowly getting through my backlog and finished Mad Max after years of having it on my backlog.
The game really rewards being aggressive. There’s a reason enemies drop health pickups where they die - keep moving and take advantage of that.
I think now that I have TK Throw I’ll try this more, seems like I can knock out a few mooks at a time with a filing cabinet
Fire extinguishers are your friend.
Control is fantastic! I’m really excited to pick up Resonance soon, and I’ve been trying not to spoil myself too much on it.
As for tips, a lot of things can be done in any order, so if you find yourself dying over and over to a certain encounter, go look for some side-objectives to do and level up a bit, then come back and take down that thing that was kicking your ass.
This bears repeating for those playing Control Resonant as well.
