I remain utterly discombobulated that 90% of redditors haven’t already migrated here. What exactly are they waiting for? Lemmy clearly is more than good enough already.
Users love big tech. They pretend not to, but they love their shackles.
For instance, when Twitter was bought by Elon and people had that big migration wave… Mastodon was right there, a fully matured ecosystem, same or even better features… yet the majority picked Bluesky, the “features” Bluesky offered are there in Mastodon, the only difference is Bluesky is also owned by private tech bros.
Judging by comments it’s almost entirely the lack of content on lemmy puts people off
A lot of the OG’s have moved over. From Diggs exoduses (exodi? exodipodes?) We’re always the first to move, though. Digital nomads.
And the ones that would have been on Digg had they been born a decade or more earlier.
Eventually everyone else follows us, the new platform turns to shit, and we migrate again.
I hope the open, federated nature of lemmy prevents that…or at least delays it.
Joined Lemmy about a month ago after 17 years of using Reddit. Account was deleted. A once very great haven for open discussion has turned into one of censorship inundated with bots to push propaganda. The writing was on the wall in 2015 and while its demise started slowly the rate enshitification grew.
What I don’t understand is given it’s inundated with bots posting/commenting to direct the narrative, what is the point of creating more obstacles for the common person to be duped. You’d think they’d want to keep it easy access to spread their “message”.
They have the top google spots now for just about any question on any topic.
Obviously the next step is to use that position to their advantage – hide the content until the user is logged in. The Pinterest Strategy.
Control and tracking is the reason, and selling that data.
Those “obstacles” are there for profit, and probably some censorship. If the user says something they don’t like, they’re easier to ban or have the algorithm not show the post.
Because all the porn is still there
FediNSFW exists and is growing.
Lemmy sure has porn, it’s just tucked away neatly in other instances that are not federated to the rest of the network.
I understand that in many of the most popular subreddits (if not site-wide) mentioning Lemmy is forbidden or rewarded with a ban.
Are you sure you want that?
I do want some of them, yes. But perhaps most I want reddit to burn.
spread the word
These posts and comments about reddit are akin to stalking your ex on Facebook and reveling in their unraveling.
This is an opportunity for Lemmy and the community.
We must be more free and decentralized. NO to impositions and opposition to freedom of expression! I’ve just joined Lemmy after REDFASCISTS banned me, also my country -Türkiye- is going to start ID verification to use social platforms that’s another why I migrated to Lemmy.
Freedom in speech, Freedom in decision!
Let’s ask DuckDuckGo, Brave and other privacy-centric search engines to index Fediverse contents at the top of pages how Kagi has option to search them via a dedicated button.
People are still being routed to Reddit and other enshittificated trash platforms because of search results. At least privacy based SE must route here and Fediverse networks!
Such loss to the internet and every single guide over internet…
No more 7yo [removed by moderator] and [deleted by user] most precious tutorials, hints, guides, solutions.
“and more protective of Reddit data”
It’s not Reddit data, it’s our fucking data, which, BTW, you have already sold.
The platform is yours and the shareholder’s, the data is ours.
Doubt this is true according to their TOS
Almost certain, although I wonder how far back the tos, or when would the tos have changed, to “give” the data to reddit, and whether it would be admissible in court. I believe many tos which have been accepted online have been thrown out in courts. I may be wrong of course, IANAL.
Oh no. Anyway.
Reddit is incredibly chaotic, and their systems frequently crash for no apparent reason. Plus, there are more ads than posts.
And more bots than people
Vast majority of ‘old redditors’ still believe reddit is their home. Its not, there are so many more normies on reddit now, that it is legitimately a normie space. And making it a walled garden is the only way Reddit Inc can grow.
The very reason I switched to Lemmy.
How funny, it’s been a logged out only experience for me for years now.
It’s been a nothing experience for me for years. I don’t miss it, honestly. Life goes on.
Is it “read only” experience?
Front page of the internet my ass
How the mighty have fallen.
And age verification is a thing. I miss the excellent discussions. I don’t see them here. It’s a list of comments, no reactions.
What do you mean by reactions, like the badge things, or conversations?
As others mentioned, it’s been a bot-in-only experience. When bot posts are in a small sub of maybe 1000 people, heh they got rid of the counters, then maybe it’s a dead horse.
Funny thing is that apple freezes the app (even if you are logged in) and pops up an “age verification” window. You can just close it and continue browsing.
(… At least for now)
If you can close it, then that’s old enough.
For those of you who are interested and still want to go on Reddit for any reason, Redlib still works… kind of. My personal instance running Nachtalb’s fork still works, but not sure for how long
There are still a small shortlist of public instances that are up, and ppl are pushing fixes that circumvent whatever shenanigans Reddit is pulling. Although, some folks are suspecting that Reddit SWEs are monitoring the redlib project with close attention & trying to shut down any workarounds the redlib team finds
yeah same here
I deleted my reddit account back in 2023 after the API changes. I run my own redlib instance to read stuff about some niche interests, but once that stops working i’ll stop that too. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
On mobile you can still use RedReader to browse reddit anonymously.
I had an old reddit account from before they required an email address. After I commented about the Chinese genocide of the Uyghurs, a hacker used failed login attempts to flag my account, which triggered reddit to demand an email address. I took that as my cue to leave the site altogether.
Haha, that just means you did something that stung them. Look at Mbappe now, he’s being completely sidelined and having his contract terminated.
